General Motors goes green for a week

ENERGY[2]We, at General Motors India, are whole-heartedly committed to ensuring that the society and environment we live in is as safe and healthy as any other. And, over the years, we’ve tried to make a difference by conducting various activities related to this cause.

General Motors’ Talegaon plant recently concluded its first Energy Conservation Week. Held from June 17th – 22nd 2013, the idea behind this was to raise awareness amongst all about the importance of natural resource management and conservation. The program started-off with a note from the Plant Head, Mr. Rakesh Sabbarwal, where he spoke about the importance of energy conservation and laid the agenda for the week.

After the traditional diya lighting by the senior leadership and an “Energy Pledge” taken by all across different shops, it was time for the Energy Conservation Week to begin. There were a host of activities for all to indulge in which included sessions on ENCON ideas and seminars on ‘The most dreadful power pollutants in the industry’. There was even a special talk on ‘Energy Saving Tips for Home’ organized for Urja ladies. A series of e-mails were sent out every day, focusing on the importance of energy conservation as well.

Apart from this, there was a quiz organized for shop floor employees, a tree plantation drive hosted for the senior leadership and a stall set up in the cafeteria displaying energy saving products.

With the program receiving such a warm and enthusiastic response from everyone, the first Energy Conservation week was a big success. And we’re proud of it! We will surely be conducting more such programs in the future, because we, at Chevrolet, care!

The Exquisite BEAT

Beat-blog-post[27]The Chevrolet Beat for me has been a real winner with its out of the box design and sports car look and feel. But I had chosen to steer clear of the Petrol/ CNG versions as I already own a CNG vehicle which is very good to drive. But diesel was a different ballgame with the Chevrolet Beat’s Diesel engine.

I was looking for a diesel hatchback for a really long time. I almost gave into another car but felt I wanted something different and new. And then the Beat diesel came and gave it to me. I started following up about the launch of the car. I went to various showrooms and test drove the car some 4 times. I also test drove other cars, but ground clearance was one of the negative aspects of the other car I was considering, so I gave up.

I started the engine (1.0 TCDI) of Chevy Beat Diesel and was waiting for the noise to sink in. There wasn’t any! Drove it further, instantly felt the turbo and boy did I get hooked. Showed the car to my wife and she liked it too. Not that she had any choice but to like it!

Exterior smooth curve – I didn’t quite like the satin roof rails and the rear spoiler. The back door handles are inspiring. The car is tall from the front and, unmistakably Chevy. The tall grille screams Chevy with its big badge bulging from the center. The small boot door, the funny rear bumper bulges from the rear invite others to kiss it! But one can’t design a car on one’s own yet! So I planned for Chevy Beat Diesel basic model and wanted to modify it on my own. I bought it in the year 2011.

Interior (space and comfort) – low but adequate seats. The buckets are nicely shaped. The dash has good space; the interior is well lit with ample pockets and spaces for cans, bottles and newspaper. Tall dashboard, is not as appealing I feel.

I find the dark grey interiors much better than the beige option provided by some other cars. In my personal opinion, the interiors of the Beat are better than most of the other cars in its price range.

Engine performance, fuel economy and gearbox all make for a zippy engine.Turbo kicks in around 2000rpm. Traveling in the city is a breeze. On the expressway, I sped to around 125 kmph and the car gave an FE (Fuel Efficiency) of approx. 22kmpl with 100% ac 90-10 highway-city usage. The EPS works amazingly well.Air-conditioning is adequate and very effective.

While driving in the city, I have never found the 3-cylinder diesel engine lacking anything. However, on one instance,on an unpaved inclined wet hilly road, I found it slightly underpowered. I think it’s being too demanding on this puny engine.

Ride Quality and Handling – The Beat just grips the road and creases out the bumps easily. The suspension is soft but solid at the same time. A down side is that I feel the steering does not centre out after negotiating a curve or turning.I am going to check with other users on the same.

Final words – Goodcar to own but, there may be users differing. But this one fits the bill perfectly and the Chevy promise says that I am to spend less than Rs 17,500/- in 3 years or 45,000 kms. What can I say? Happy with the buy!!!

Overall Build Quality: It’s quite a reliable car. Till date I have not faced any issues.

SAIL Hatchback is what you deserve

SAIL U-VAThe truth of life is that you always want to demand more from everything. A car is no different, after all, it is the second largest investment you are likely to make after a house. Autocar India, one India’s leading automobile publications, recently published a piece about things to look for in an ideal car, and the varied demands we tend to have from a car. The following are the demands you must make from the car you intend to purchase:

  • The car should look good
  • It should be fantastically comfortable
  • It should be loaded with the latest tech
  • The car should be fun to drive
  • It should give you a choice of powerful, yet frugal diesel and petrol engines
  • It should have lots of storage space
  • The car should be economical, not just to buy, but also to run and maintain
  • The car should not compromise the safety of your family and loved ones
  • It should be great value for money
  • The car should be backed by a nationwide network of service outlets, so that you can explore this country without a bother

To sum up, you want a luxury car that meets all your demands without demanding you pay for it with an arm and a leg. Sounds like a typical ‘Which car should we buy’ discussion? We figured. And yes, there is a car that meets your demands – The Chevrolet SAIL Hatchback!

To start with, the first thing you see about a car – its styling! With hawk-wing style front headlamps and chrome inserts, the Sail Hatchback hits the sweet spot as soon as you set your eyes on it. You are, however, going to be spending a major chunk of your time with the car on the inside. Harmonious dual-tone interiors coupled with a dual-cockpit design, inspired from the Corvette, give you a feeling of plush luxury every time you step into your car. The Bluetooth enabled integrated entertainment system will keep you entertained on your drives, no matter how short or long!

Not only will the Chevrolet Sail Hatchback seat 5 passengers in comfort, it will also hold your belongings like laptops, water bottles, bags and whatever else you carry with you! To add to the convenience, the Chevrolet Sail Hatchback offers power steering, power windows, power adjustable outside rearview mirrors, tilt steering, remote keyless entry and even a luggage compartment lamp. That’s a no compromise situation!

With a safety cage, side impact beams on front and rear doors, dual airbags, ABS & EBD and a child lock, the Chevrolet Sail Hatchback ticks all the boxes on safety, and then some! While the safety features will ensure you get from point A to B safely, the SMARTECH Diesel & Petrol engines on offer in the Chevrolet Sail Hatchback will get you there without stopping at the fuel station very often, while ensuring a smooth and powerful drive. To complement the performance of the engine, there is the fantastic handling and suspension, which will keep you happy not only over bad roads, but also on twisty highways!

The icing on the cake is the Chevrolet Promise and Warranty. While the former will ensure you have minimal running costs over a 3 year/45,000km (whichever earlier) period, the best-in-class 3 year/100,000km warranty will ensure you have peace of mind from the day you take delivery of your car! Is it any wonder that the Chevrolet Sail Hatchback was the most awarded car in its segment?

Experience more with Chevrolet

1[4]Sitting on your front porch, gawking at the cloudy blue sky and wondering what to do? Maybe you could take some inspiration from Dhawal Mhatre! Dhawal decided to drive down from Vasai to Lonavla one Saturday night. And here’s his experience:

“Saturday night, my bags were packed and I was ready for a road trip with my friends and my Chevrolet Captiva.

We left from Vasai and started our little journey with a full tank and a car filled to capacity with my friends. With the weather not in our favor and traffic being a headache, things didn’t start off too brightly. But this didn’t shatter our enthusiasm. To get out of this rut, we decided to take a U-turn and found another way through JVLR (Jogeshwari-Vikroli link road). Even though the road on this lesser used track was filled with potholes, we hardly felt them in the Captiva.

Eventually, we hit the Mumbai-Pune expressway and with some good music playing, it was smooth sailing thereafter till Lonavla thanks to the spaciousness and comfort of the car. We stopped by a local dhaba and filled ourselves on some scrumptious food and enjoyed the night that lay before us.

No sooner had we reached, it was time to head back. Heavy showers meant the road ahead wasn’t too visible for most our, but the powerful headlamps of the car made this a lot easier and safer for us.

In the end, everyone was happy with this little trip and enjoyed the drive. I am looking forward to more such road trips especially with my Captiva.”

Chevrolet’s all about exploring the unknown. How about you take your own little trip in your Chevy and tell us about your experience! We would love to hear about it!

Chevrolet tips on car washing

Car-wash[6]Helpful tips for washing your car

Let’s face it. None of us actually have the time to wash our cars ourselves. This is a job that we’ve conveniently delegate to lesser mortals. And what do they do? Take the shortcut. Sprinkle it with a little water, wipe the smudges and voila! Look your car’s spic and span. But is that good enough? More importantly, is it good enough for your car? How about a few smart tips that will keep your car sparkling clean and presentable for longer!

  • Let’s get the obvious one out of the way first. Your grandma’s remedies won’t work here!
  • Remember, household cleaners are meant for the house. Not cars. So if you’re using those to clean your car, stop! Use automotive cleaning products only.
  • Cars don’t have sunscreens. So, don’t wash your vehicle under the hot sun. The cleaning product will dry up quickly becoming harder to remove and could leave your car looking like it was scratched in a brawl.
  • Give your car some love and some warmth. Rinse it in warm water before applying anything. That makes it a whole lot easier to remove mud, dirt, smudges and dust.
  • Start at the grassroots. Always wash from bottom to top, and then back down again. Why? Because if you work from top to bottom, the dirty water will drain down the panels and make it harder to see where you have cleaned.
  • Don’t let your dirty linen get your car soiled. Clean your wash cloth regularly with detergent to remove any dirt that might be left on it. Using a dirty cloth is basically putting dirt back on your car.
  • Polished appearances make great impressions. A good waxing goes a long way in protecting your vehicle from dirt. So, get your car polished every 4 – 6 months. That should be enough. Your car will be much easier to clean. There you go! Some really easy, yet effective and clever tips to keep your car looking sparking new. Because that’s the way it should be!

Chevrolet Enjoy is as safe as it gets

Enjoy Cage BlogChevrolet Enjoy is safety uncompromised

We, at Chevrolet, give safety a lot of priority. We put in hours of hard work and conduct extensive and meticulous examinations with state-of-the-art technology so that the Chevrolet you drive is as safe as a cocoon. And the spacious new Enjoy is no exception when it comes to this.

The Chevrolet Enjoy has a “Safe Cage” body structure which is supported by across-the-board use of high-strength steel that provides a degree of rigidity and stability for the vehicle.

Enjoy also comes with long-members that are welded to the front and rear floor, thus resulting in an advanced hybrid chassis. This gives the car rigidity, adds strength to the ladder frame and refinement to the monocoque chassis.

But that’s not all! Extra crumple zones have been integrated in the overall design of the Enjoy to absorb impact in the event of a collision. In addition to this, there are 10 high strength anti-collision beams, which disperse the impact energy in different directions and increase the safety of passengers.

There you go! Not only is the Chevrolet Enjoy big on space and comfort, but a “Safe Cage” body structure, along with ABS + EBD and dual airbags, make it one of the safest MPVs available in the Indian market today. So when are you booking your Enjoy?

Lowell Paddock interviewed by Auto Tech Review

Paddock Interview ImageMr. Lowell Paddock, President & Managing Director, General Motors India, has been part of GM since 1992, and over the years has used his expert skills to guide GM India to great success. He recently sat down for an interview with Aprit Mahendra from Auto Tech Review Magazine to discuss all things Chevrolet, the SAIL Sedan and the recently launched Enjoy.

Here are some of his thoughts on various topics:

On technical capabilities of the technical centre: “They work on various areas such as powertrain design, interior trim design and supporting our manufacturing engineering activities all around General Motors International Operations (GMIO)… They also support markets outside India.”

On new vehicle programs and product strategy: “Our product portfolio in India consists of three major pillars. One is a completely local product that makes sense only in the Indian market… The next sets of vehicles are global programmes, which consist of vehicles such as the Cruze, Beat and Spark in the portfolio… The third are our partner programmes like the SAIL and Enjoy.”

On Talegaon powertrain facility: “The facility is India’s first to have a flexible line, which can produce petrol and diesel engines at the same time… Given the frequent oscillations in the market in the past 18 months or so, the flexible nature of the plant has been a great asset to us.”

On plans to make technology cost effective in India: “We’re already working on vehicle lightweighting, improving engine technology, cost effective add-ons such as start/stop and other things that can be done to reduce friction.”

Mr. Paddock had a lot to speak about and shared his knowledge on various other topics as well. You can read the entirety of this insightful interview in Auto Tech Review Magazine. Or you can click on the link provided.

Tips to reduce car pollution

Tips to reduce pollutionWith World Environment Day being witnessed around the world, we, at Chevrolet, would like to give you a few tips on how to reduce the pollution produced by your car.

Regular Maintenance

A regularly serviced car with clean and well-oiled engine improves the mileage of the vehicle. Thus, the engine needs to be tuned regularly along with an oil change. Tyre pressure should be checked and maintained so as to reduce unnecessary pressure on the engine.

Stay within speed limits

Rapid changes in speed, sudden brakes and changing direction, is a dangerous and an expensive driving habit. Apart from increasing the chances of a serious accident, it also puts pressure on the engine, reducing mileage and increasing pollution. Breathe deeply while you let your engine idle so as to calm your nerves and prepare yourself for the journey ahead. This helps you focus and keep your mind alert.

Keeping your vehicle clean

Regularly washing your car helps keep dirt and dust out of your engine, thus reducing oil consumption and prolonging the life of the engine.

Also, try to avoid carrying around unnecessary luggage in your car as this increases the load on your engine, reducing mileage and increasing pollution caused by the vehicle.

These simple tips can go a long way in helping reduce your carbon footprint. And if you really feel like helping out, following these pointers wouldn’t be hard.

Be an environment friendly driver

Fuel-gauge blog imageIn just a few simple steps you can do your bit for the environment. A little care can transform you into an eco-friendly driver and save you hundreds of Rupees in fuel costs.

HERE ARE SOME DOs AND DON’Ts BEFORE YOU TAKE THAT DRIVE:

  • A properly tuned engine that has passed the emission test will improve fuel economy by about 4%.
  • Check the tyre pressure. An appropriately inflated tyre can reduce fuel consumption due to decreased roll resistance – in fact according to some estimates you can improve fuel economy by more than 3%.
  • Replace a clogged or dirty air filter – it will improve your car’s fuel economy by as much as 10 %.
  • If you own more than one car, drive the one that gives the best fuel efficiency.
  • Use the recommended grade of engine oil – it can improve your fuel economy by 1-2 %.
  • Place items inside the boot whenever possible to improve your fuel economy. Avoid carrying items on your vehicle’s roof as a loaded roof increases aerodynamic drag and can lower fuel efficiency.
  • Travel light. Avoid carrying unnecessary items, especially heavy ones. Extra weight means increased fuel consumption.

ONCE YOU’RE IN THE DRIVER’S SEAT:

  • Use the right gears at appropriate speeds and move to the highest gear once you are cruising. This lowers engine speed, saves fuel, and reduces engine wear. Refer to your owner’s manual for precise information on shifting gears.
  • Sudden starts and stops, jumping lanes, sudden acceleration – it doesn’t just make you more susceptible to accidents, it also wastes fuel and lowers fuel economy by as much as 33%.
  • If you’re stopping for more than a minute, switch off the engine because your car will be burning fuel while going nowhere.
  • Don’t speed! Your fuel economy declines rapidly when you drive above 70 kmph.

THINK BEFORE YOU COMMUTE:

  • If you have office colleagues who live nearby – carpool! It cuts weekly fuel costs and reduces wear and tear on your car too!
  • Plan ahead, combine errands. Yes, you may have heard all these before – but they can cut emissions and save fuel.
  • If possible, avoid peak rush hours. You’ll spend less time sitting in traffic, burn less fuel, and avoid stress as well.
