GM India’s Talegaon Manufacturing Plant gets recognized for Energy Reduction Progress

blog-images[4]General Motors, over the years has taken big steps to reducing its carbon footprint. And these steps have also been applied to GM India’s Talegaon manufacturing plant as well. The Talegaon plant is one of 54 GM facilities worldwide which meets a voluntary energy-reduction challenge set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This has led to a 12 percent cut in its energy intensity in less than two years; meeting the EPA’s ENERGY STAR® Challenge for Industry Award.

So what exactly is ENERGY STAR? It was introduced by EPA (U.S Environmental Protection Agency) in 1992 as a voluntary partnership to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the efficient use of energy. ENERGY STAR’s label is now found on over 60 products as well as new homes and commercial and industrial buildings that meet strict energy-efficiency specifications set by the EPA.

To meet the ENERGY STAR Challenge for Industry Award isn’t an easy task and GM has been working hard to cover the requirements. The facilities are needed to reduce their energy intensity by 10 percent within a five years period. This stipulation led to the Talegaon manufacturing plant releasing 4,419 tons less of CO2 into the atmosphere.

GM’s Vice President of Sustainability and Global Regulatory Affairs, Mr. Mike Robinson said, “Our employees are committed to helping increase our global operations’ energy efficiency.” He went on to state, “They remain at the core of our progress… The total amount of energy savings across all GM manufacturing plants is $90 million and most of the plants are located in the U.S. and Asian countries.”

Mr. Lowell Paddock, President & Managing Director, General Motors India explained saying “To achieve the Challenge for Industry Award, our  manufacturing plant used various innovative energy-saving strategies like adoption of  energy efficient designs &  technologies, optimization of  process parameters, usage of  reliable process controls and lighting systems among other energy saving methods to reduce energy consumption. Through a diligent environmental process, we have instilled a sense of responsibility to the environment that goes beyond our location in India.”  Going by what Mr. Paddock had to say, GM India’s Talegaon plant aims to further reduce its emissions by implementing heating and cooling guidelines, efficient operation of heating equipment and reducing or shutting down energy use during the period the plant is not in production mode.

GM has already received an ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year award the previous year for its energy management.  From 2005-10, it managed to reduce energy use in all its global facilities by 28 percent and has since set a new itself a new goal to reduce 20 per cent energy intensity globally by 2020. Not surprisingly, General Motors India received the third prize for Energy Conservation at the National Energy Conservation Awards 2010. In 2011, GM India’s Talegaon manufacturing plant got two more awards in State Level competition for Excellence in Energy Conservation and Management in the Automobile Manufacturing Sector.

Chevrolet becomes the official Sponsor of 2 major European Football Clubs

articlesChevrolet being one of the biggest automobile brands in the world decided to collaborate with two of the biggest sport franchises in the world, Manchester United and Liverpool, who are ironically rival clubs playing in the English Premier League.

Chevy and Manchester United:-

In May 2012, Chevrolet replaced Audi as the official car sponsor for one of the biggest football teams, Manchester United. From the 2014-15 season Chevrolet will become the team’s shirt sponsor. A deal that is said to be for seven years. The new shirt sponsorship deal is worth an “incredible” £357million between now and 2021 which is more than double than what their current package brings in.

Chevrolet will be the club’s fifth shirt sponsor in history and the deal is worth well over the £20m per season currently being paid by AON. Speaking about the collaboration Man United’s commercial director Richard Arnold said: “This is a fantastic, long-term deal for the club. We have been partners with Chevrolet for only six weeks, but already they have produced some fantastic ideas that will benefit both the partnership and our 659 million followers around the world. They are a key partner on our current tour and I know they have enjoyed experiencing the buzz generated by our fanatical support and the sell-out crowds in South Africa, China, and Europe.”

Alan Batey, General Motors’ North America VP of US Sales and Service was quoted saying: “We are extremely proud to connect our brand, Chevrolet, with Manchester United and its passionate supporters all around the world.”

“Manchester United’s statistics are impressive, but this relationship goes far beyond the numbers – this relationship is about connecting our brand with the deep-seated emotion that surrounds the team everywhere it goes. And, to be only the fifth name on the iconic red jersey is a genuine honour. We very much look forward to the road ahead and the opportunities we have in partnering with such a legendary club.”

The Chevy – Liverpool Association

Their four-year deal with Liverpool is that of the club’s official car sponsor. The partnership runs to the end of the 2015/16 campaign. Ian Ayre, managing director of the Anfield club, said the deal showed “the value of Liverpool’s international appeal.”

Chevrolet was also the official sponsor for Liverpool’s North American pre-season tour, which saw them play Toronto FC, AS Roma and Tottenham Hotspurs in the US. In July 2012, Chevrolet and English Premier League football team Liverpool F.C. announced a four-year partnership which would see Chevrolet become the official automotive partner of the club.

A significant milestone achieved!

Blog Images_100000 engineGM India rolls out its 100,000th engine

The Talegaon manufacturing plant just reached the milestone of producing 100,000 engines. This has been achieved within just two years of the powertrain facility’s inception in Maharashtra. This is a huge milestone for the company given that the facility is GM’s first powertrain plant in the world that simultaneously produces both petrol and diesel engines.

The facility is known to produce the most fuel-efficient engine in India. The 1.0 litre diesel engine that does duty in the Beat is one of the smallest and cleanest diesel engines in the world which also makes it the most popular car from GM’s stable in India. The popularity extends to the 1.3 SDE (small diesel engine) that powers the newest car from the GM portfolio – the all new SAIL U-VA.

Not to be left behind are GM’s small gasoline engines, the most fun to drive gasoline engines in various cars such as Spark, Beat and SAIL U-VA. The Talegaon facility churns out 1.0 litre and 1.2 litre gasoline engines with high level of performance compared with the competition.

2012 has already been a remarkable year for General Motors India and it just got better with this landmark achievement, thanks to the ever increasing popularity of the Chevrolet Beat and all new SAIL U-VA. Commenting on the achievement, Mr. Lowell Paddock, President & Managing Director, General Motors India said, “This is a proud moment for us all of us at GM India. Crossing the milestone of producing 100,000 engines at the Powetrain plant is a testament of our commitment to the Indian market. With the launch of the Chevrolet SAIL U-VA and the forthcoming launches of Chevrolet SAIL and Chevrolet Enjoy, we will be stepping up the production at the plant. We look forward to achieving more milestones as we go ahead and offer best-in-segment cars in the Indian automobile market.”

The General Motors India’s Talegaon manufacturing plant was also recently recognized by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for Energy Reduction Progress. The plant is one of GM’s 54 facilities worldwide to meet this voluntary energy-reduction challenge set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The Talegaon manufacturing facility managed in cutting its energy intensity by 12 percent in less than two years thereby avoiding the release of 4,419 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.

WTCC Macau: Cruze finishes its 8-year WTCC dream run with amazing wins

A true winner almost always has the same story to tell. The Chevrolet Cruze, with its recent performance at the WTCC Macau, only proves this point. The Chevrolet Cruze ended the 2012 season with a massive and unprecedented 1,025 points after double and triple finishes.

Chevrolet achieved a historical record by being the first constructor ever to pass the 1,000-point threshold, ahead of BMW (650) and SEAT (617). The Macau race was the last for Chevrolet in the WTCC series after an extraordinary eight-year journey that produced three double WTCC titles (Manufacturers’ and Drivers’) and a staggering 68 race wins. Here are some memorable words by the Chevrolet Cruze drivers themselves:

Rob Huff: “What an incredible day! I really made things difficult for myself in Race 1 when I hit a wall – I guess I wanted to ensure the entertainment until the very last moment. It was a stupid mistake that could have cost me a lot. The boys did a fantastic job to repair the car for Race 2 and I must thank all the mechanics, including Alain’s and Yvan’s crews who also helped out. This is proof of the fantastic team spirit. It is going to take a while before I realize I’m the new World Champion. I guess it’s something that has to sink in slowly. It’s a perfect end to a fantastic venture. Eight years ago, Chevrolet and RML took a gamble on me and I hope today I proved them right.”

Alain Menu: “It’s great to finish with a win. In a way I am closing the loop. I won the first race for Chevrolet in 2006 at Brands Hatch (UK), and now the last one… and we are leaving the WTCC with a 1-2-3; it’s great. Needless to say, I am a little bit disappointed not to win the Drivers’ title by so few points, but that’s racing. I knew I had to win both races to be in with a chance, and I came close to doing so. Overall I had a good season and I am very happy with what we achieved. It’s still hard to realize that it is all over – we will definitely be sad tomorrow, but tonight, we’ll surely have a great party.”

Yvan Muller (1st/3rd): “A bronze medal in the WTCC was missing in my collection, but now I have it… Clearly, I would have preferred another outcome, but I knew it was going to be difficult to win the championship after Shanghai. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, and you have to accept it. I want to congratulate Rob on his title – it is well-deserved. Race 1 was good for me. I was happy to win in Macau for the first time. In Race 2 there was this incident with Alex MacDowall; he missed the apex at the Mandarin corner, the fastest of all, and I was too close to being able to do anything to avoid him. I am sorry, but relieved he is OK. Being with Chevrolet these last three years has been a terrific experience and I will retain great memories of this time.”

Vijay Iyer, Director (Communications), Chevrolet Europe summed up Team Chevrolet’s highly successful run with some very inspiring words: “I want to thank our drivers and everybody at RML for the outstanding job, the commitment and the spirit shown during this weekend, the entire season and the eight years of Chevrolet’s presence in the WTCC. To finish with a 1-2-3 is really symbolic of how great this experience has been for everyone involved. This has been a fantastic program for Chevrolet, which has brought a lot to our brand, and we say goodbye to the WTCC with a sense of pride for our achievements.”

With the Chevrolet Cruze bidding goodbye to WTCC, there will be a little dejection back at the camp. But as they say, ‘tomorrow is a brand new day’; and with those words Chevrolet Cruze will surely race right back, to achieve brand new milestones on the highway of motorsports!

Road Tripping – India’s Best Routes for Motoring Nirvana!

blog_img1There are two kinds of travellers. Those who travel from point A to point B, looking for the shortest/most comfortable means to do so. And then there are those who make their own way, taking the road less traveled, and quite literally at that! India, a country as diverse as can be in every sense of the word, is also the perfect playground for the ones who wish to go the extra mile on their own accord, traversing great distances fuelled by nothing more than a relentless desire and a tankful of gas in their favorite ride. Here’s a glimpse of India’s best roads to experience motoring nirvana!

Golden triangle (Delhi-Agra-Jaipur): Easily the first choice of thousands of road trip enthusiasts, the golden triangle has earned the moniker in every sense of the word. Studded with magnificent sights from the Red Fort and Jama Masjid in Delhi; to the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri in Agra; and last but not the least, one can visit the Keoladeo Ghana National Park en route to Jaipur, which has quite a few spectacles to its credit as well, namely City Palace, Amber Fort and Hawa Mahal.

Manali-Leh: Although it’s a pretty unpredictable and tasking ride, the journey is an amazing experience nevertheless. There’s nothing that comes even remotely close to the feeling of achievement as one crosses four mountain passes across a distance of 4900 metres, including the fabled Rohtang. Roads are generally open from June to late September.

Chennai-Mahabalipuram-Pondicherry-Chidambaram-Thanjavur-Trichy-Madurai: It’s a southern surprise like no other – Starting from Chennai and taking the East Coast Road for a quick stop at the Cholamandala Artist’s Village, followed by a visit to the ruins of Mahabalipuram, a World Heritage Site. French elegance coupled with a dash of Tamil culture greets you in Pondicherry, while the great Nataraja temple complex in Chidambaram offers many awe-inspiring sights. Add the ancient capital of the Chola empire, Thanjavur; Trichy, home to possibly India’s biggest temple complex, and Madurai, one of India’s oldest cities, and you have a fantastic journey on the cards.

Jaipur-Pushkar-Udaipur-Kumbhalgarh-Jodhpur-Jaisalmer: The state of Rajasthan offers one of the most picturesque driving routes featuring its most iconic cities. The holy city of Pushkar, Lake Pichola at Udaipur, a journey through the Aravallis en route to Jumbhalgarh, an overdose of blue in Jodhpur and the royal destination of Jaiselmer await the discerning traveller.

Happy motoring!

Racer by Spirit, Car by Choice

articles3When the Cruze was built, an ordinary drive was the last thing on the mind of its engineers. It was packaged to deliver an experience which would only be limited by your imagination. It was a car designed to Cruze.
The Cruze nameplate refers to a globally developed, designed and manufactured four door compact sedan, which was complemented by a five-door hatchback body variant. The journey of the car can be traced back to the Tokyo Motor Show of 1999, where it was launched as the YGM1 Concept. The production Chevrolet Cruze was finally revealed by GM in October 2001, with Japanese sales commencing the following month. With a decade of engineering and a number of facelifts later, the Cruze is set to breathe fire down the backs of its competition, in its latest avatar.
The car is stylish and definitely intimidating. The broad shoulders, chiseled frame, wide track and long wheelbases speak of an automobile that is both bold and sporty. The dual bezel headlamps are adequate to light up every adventure that you undertake on it, while delivering distinctive style. Split design tail lamps ensure that your car stands at the front of the league, even from the back. 16” alloy wheels conquer any road they are set on. The new stylish chrome grille with the golden bowtie seals the promise of absolute power that comes along with the Cruze.
Accompanied by turbo-charged intelligence, the Cruze is a perfectionist. The commanding 2.0 l VCDi diesel engine is testimony to its muscle power. The car is nifty for its solid build and size. Blame it on the 6-speed Automatic Transmission that delivers superb gearshifts without any visible loss of power and momentum. The sixth gear maximizes fuel economy at cruising speed, restoring the power right at your fingertips. McPherson strut-type front suspension balances your car, bestowing handling agility, which results in a better and quitter performance. At the back, the U-shaped rear suspension with torsion beams and gas charged shock absorbers ensure that your ride is smooth, comfortable and de-stressing.
The Cruze embraced the racing circuit in 2009 and took the entire community by storm. It started with Yvan Muller grabbing the 2010 championship title and occupying all three top positions in 2011. The race version car packs a 1.6-liter turbocharged gasoline engine developing 230 kilowatts (310 PS) and 335 NM (247 lb·ft) of torque, making it an automobile which sets new standards in car racing.
The 2012 championship has had Yvan Muller, Alain Menu and Robert Huff occupy 1st, 2nd and 4th position, reinforcing the reign of the unbeatable Cruze.
The Chevrolet Cruze comes in a series of eight scintillating metallic shades, making it a reflection of your style. Even while standing, it has the potential to turn every other car green with envy. Thanks to its dynamic coupe-like proportions and signature robust front grille, the Cruze inspires admiration like no other. With the Cruze, you get only one option; you embrace a champion.
