How changing weather affects your car

Car maintenance tips

Cars are one of the major investments one make and as a proud Chevrolet owner you would always want that your investment is well taken care of. Changing weather however can affect how your car operates because of the shifts in temperature and the change in moisture accompanying the seasons. Here are a few things you might need to look into-

Battery

If you have been using your battery for over three years, you must have an authorized car mechanic check its capacity and the alternator output so that you don’t face cold start troubles during winters. The ends of the battery terminal also need to be corrosion free.

The Gas Tank

The gas tank must be filled halfway during colder temperatures as it will help reduce the build-up of moisture in the fuel lines. The more moisture builds up, the more the likelihood that the fuel system will freeze and not work, in extremely cold conditions.

Belts and Hoses

All the rubber belts and hoses in your car must be in good condition. Adverse weather conditions can cause belts to incur heavy cracks, while the coolant hoses can get damaged in extreme heat conditions.

Brakes

Brakes play an important role in keeping the car safe. It is important to get your brakes checked every six months, as brake fluid can leak or freeze, if you happen to use your car in an excessively hot or cold environment.

If you have your car prepared in advance, it shall easily survive the excessive weather changes and give you miles of trouble free service.

Pre-delivery-inspection (PDI)

Blog-Image---Safety-Check-before-your-trip[2]

Very few moments in your life can match the happiness experienced in purchasing a brand new car. But here are a few points to be kept in mind before taking your favourite new car home

  • Confirm the date of delivery with your dealership. It is advisable to go there only after the car has been prepared and is ready. If you have preferences for a particular day/time (for auspicious reasons), inform the sales person in advance. It is recommended that you accept delivery in broad daylight.
  • Ascertain that you are carrying the required documentation with you. This may include forms, receipts and others. It’s a great idea to take a relative or friend along for suggestions.
  • It is the salesperson’s job to acquaint you with your new car’s features and how everything operates. Ask him to demonstrate the car fully to avoid hiccups later. Also visit the Service Department and meet the service manager.
  • Carefully walk around the car, ensuring that it is immaculately clean and look for any signs of repair work / damage. Even the interiors should be sparkling clean. Check that all lights and electric accessories are working fine and all the accessories you ordered are fitted in the car. Confirm that the spare wheel, tools (spanner, jack etc.) as well as wipers, floor matting, first-aid kit and hazard sign are in place. Also make sure that there is enough fuel in the car to get you to the nearest petrol pump.
  • Check that the Chassis and Engine number of the car matches with that in the Invoice. Check that you have been handed over insurance, PUC certificate, Owner’s Manual and duplicate keys. Ensure that the original warranty with dealership stamp and warranty for third party items such as battery, tyres etc are provided.

5 easy ways to make your brakes last longer

5 easy ways to make your brakes last longer
If you have just bought your dream car and you wish to keep it in its best condition, you must take care of the brakes in your car. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
● Avoid speeding: You must take care of the speed you are driving your car. Speeding puts more strain on your brakes. The brakes at high speed turn energy into heat which damages the brakes. Drive at the authorised speed limit and your brakes shall last you much longer.
● Reduce all the extra baggage: Try to avoid carrying unnecessary luggage. The heavier the car, the more impact it will have on the brakes. So try to free and lighten your car as much as possible.
● Do not use your left foot: You should only use your right foot on the brake pedal for the brakes to have a longer life span. This will help you avoid simultaneously pushing both pedals and also to resist unnecessary brake taps.
● Do not follow: Avoid using brakes just because the person in the car ahead touched his brake for no reason. This is seen to be a very popular habit among many drivers and you should reduce it by learning to coast when these incidents take place.
● Change the brake fluids: It is essential to change your brake fluids on a regular basis to avoid any form of damage to them. If your car is old, you must consider renewing your brake fluids. When you change the brake fluids, the internal components and the brakes last longer and works better.
Follow these simple ways to take care of your car brakes and you shall notice your brakes lasting longer and working efficiently.

The Chevrolet Volt: Safe as a House

Safety Structure Volt Resized

The Chevrolet Volt is already known as the most technologically advanced, affordable and economical electric cars of the modern era. But it’s also as safe as a house!

Most Chevrolets come today with airbags and rigid body structures ensuring safe drives for one and all. And to highlight just how much an effort GM puts into assuring a safe drive, here’s a truly extraordinary story shared with us by Dr. Kerry Johnson, a Chevy Volt owner:

“I bought a 2013 Chevrolet Volt in November 2012 for my 20 year old daughter Caroline and we all loved it. I have a Porsche 911s and a BMW 740il, but the Volt was our favorite car to drive.

On August 3rd, a drunk driver hit Caroline from the right rear traveling in the same direction. The drunk driver hit our Volt so hard, it knocked the car off the road down a 15 foot embankment. Caroline in the Volt rolled several times down the embankment before hitting a tree.

She was taken by ambulance to a local hospital where she suffered only a black eye, arm lacerations and stitches to her left foot. Our insurance adjuster said he had never seen a car that mangled without a fatality.”

We are grateful to you and GM for making the Volt so safe. The fact that Caroline survived that crash was a miracle from God and the 10 Volt airbags. I am in the middle of buying another Volt right now and thought you would like to share this story with anyone else at GM or with any potential Volt buyers.”

This high standard of safety is upheld across all GM vehicles. From USA to Europe across Asia including India, you can be sure of a drive that is made to protect you and your loved ones! To learn more about Chevrolet safety, do go through our impressive carlines.

Going by this steadfast philosophy, Chevrolet recently conducted a safety drive in Bangalore for children, preparing them well in advance before getting behind the wheel.

Our dedicated CSD Team (Chevrolet Safety Drive) at GMTC-I held a workshop at Euro Kids School, Bangalore on 31st August, 2013. Children were given an education on the safety aspects of a car like seat belts, airbags, child seats etc. After a small class, a fun quiz was organized for the students. The winners and participants were graciously rewarded with GM merchandise for their enthusiastic involvement. Overall, the day turned out to be very thrilling, both for our team and the children.

Safety is something that Chevrolet takes utmost interest in. The more we educate, the safer and more enjoyable every drive in a Chevrolet car becomes. There are lots of articles on our blog regarding safety, so do feel free to browse through them. Remember, when it comes to the protection of your loved ones, an extra effort is always a good thing!

Chevrolet tips for learners

Learning driving

There is a sense of freedom one feels when you first sit in the driver’s seat of a car and start the engine. It is an experience that surely excites and delights. But as thrilling as it may be, not knowing what to do is dangerous, especially for learners and beginners. Here are some basic yet important tips that will surely help you out:

The first point that you should keep in mind is that you should get comfortable with cars. Familiarize yourself with all the basics like a clutch and its purpose, how gears work and other similar features. It’ll be much easier and will help you learn faster.

The need for speed is one of the most common desires when it comes to driving. We cannot stress on this point more – it is extremely important to start out slowly, making sure you keep your car under control. Only after you get comfortable driving, you can shift up a gear and to higher speeds. But this doesn’t mean driving rashly, endangering your life and that of your fellow travelers.

Mirrors are an important component in cars and it is imperative for learners to know how mirrors are used in driving. From changing lanes to keeping track of following traffic and parking, it is a very useful tool. It is estimated that between 25 – 50% of your driving time should be spent scanning the road.

You should understand the importance of signals. You are not the only person on the road and should make it known to other travelers what action you are about to take. This will not only keep you safe, but ensure a smooth flow of traffic as well.

As touched upon earlier, driving fast is not acceptable, however driving too slow is equally dangerous. If the road ahead is clear, then you should drive at the mentioned speed limit. Driving slowly can also cause others to become impatient and make them try dangerous maneuvers to overtake you.

Another important point for a beginner to remember is seating position. Make sure to seat yourself comfortably and correctly and your knees aren’t stretched out too far. This will give you better control of the vehicle.

And lastly, practice!

Simple, basic and big on importance. These tips are sure to go a long way in making you a confident and good driver. Easy to follow, you’ll experience the joys of driving safely and in all its glory. Happy motoring!

Tips for City Driving

City driving tips

There is a lot of joy that you can experience while driving. It’s just you and your car, cruising down the open road and living life in the fast lane. That’s unless you’re living in a city. What you get here is nothing short of a horror show on wheels, especially during rush hour traffic. Pot holes, endless traffic jams, the pollution, both air and noise, and of course the city temper. And that’s just some of the obstacles that you will have to deal with on these busy roads. But we, at Chevrolet, are going to help you out. Here are some tips to keep you safe through all this.

  • Make sure you use your turn indicators consistently and well in advance when turning or changing lanes. And don’t try forcing your way through traffic.
  • Don’t try to forge your way through traffic by stepping on the accelerator. The faster you drive, the harder you work your brakes and this, in turn, may cause more wear and tear. So stay calm and you’ll get through traffic easily.
  • You should stay alert – in fact stay twice as alert in the city! With the amount of traffic and pedestrians, there’s plenty to keep an eye on. So pay attention!
  • There’s a lot of slowing down and braking that happens when stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic. In this situation, it is advisable to brake smoothly. This helps you avoid being rear-ended.
  • Your mirrors are always important, but try looking over your shoulders for blind spots as well. Do this when changing lanes or pulling away from the curb.
  • Don’t take your frustration out on drivers who are in the wrong and allow space for errors to happen. This may help avoid accidents or tense situations. And that’s always a good thing.
  • Your turn indicators are of prime importance when it comes to city driving. But, everybody would agree that sometimes this isn’t enough. So don’t be afraid to use your hand to indicate.
  • Pay extra attention at junctions and crossing. A lot can go wrong here and a lot does. Make sure to slow down and try anticipating what others might do!

So, there you go. It isn’t that hard to keep these tips in mind and following them. After all, when it comes to driving, the safer you are, the more you can enjoy your Chevrolet.

Tips to make traveling safe for your pets

Dog[7]For some, family trips aren’t complete without their pets being part of the fun. But travelling with your pets can get rather stressful at times, for you and your furry companions. There are a few things you can do to assure safe travel for your dear pets.

  • Keep a blanket in the boot and make a place for them to sleep comfortably on the journey. Sleeping is an easy way for dogs to cope with motion sickness.
  • Let them become accustomed to rides in a car. Drive slowly when you start the car. Start with short trips and gradually take them on longer ones.
  • Make sure they don’t jump around the vehicle. Don’t roll down the window all the way and consider buying a pet safety belt. It ensures that in case of an accident, they aren’t displaced around the car.
  • Take regular stops in between and let your pet out for a while. This will keep them relaxed. Try stopping somewhere relatively quiet and away from the road if possible.
  • If you’re taking a long distance trip, you may consider buying a crate and make sure to fasten it either between seats or on the floor.
  • If you stop for food, park in the shade and let the windows down a little to let some cool air in. Keep giving your pet a bowl of water regularly to rehydrate.
  • Feed your pet with a light meal three to four hours before the journey begins. Do not feed them in a moving vehicle – even if it is a long drive.
  • Never leave your pet alone in a parked vehicle. On a hot day, even with the windows open, a car can become a furnace, and your pet can get heatstroke. In winters, a car can act as a refrigerator, holding in the cold and causing them to freeze.
  • Pet travelling kit: Carry food, a waste scoop, bowl, plastic bags, leash, medication, a pet first-aid kit and their favourite toy or pillow to make them feel comfortable.

So here you go! All the essential know how’s for you when travelling with your pets. Your vacations will be even more enjoyable now.

Night Driving Tips

Night-safety-tips[2]Cool temperatures, empty roads, minimal traffic – driving at night is always a pleasure. No pun intended but it has a dark side to it. Night driving has been known to increase the chances of an accident by as much as 300%. Apart from limited visibility, fatigue also impacts concentration levels to a great extent. Here are some tips drivers should adhere to, to ensure optimum safety.

Ninety percent of a driver’s reaction depends upon vision – which is severely limited at night. Hence extra caution is a necessity. Drivers should always be wary of this fact and make sure they don’t break any traffic rules. Changing lanes on an empty road may seem easier, but one should still signal their intent to do so before making such a maneuver as we can never be sure of any vehicle in the dark.

Darkness gravely dampens our judgment of maintaining a minimum safe distance from other vehicles. The decreased reaction time makes it a necessity to maintain greater distance between vehicles at night.

Most speed limits are set as per day driving conditions. At night, they are relatively relaxed. But that should never be taken for granted. Higher speed means less time to react and even lesser room to brake. Hence, abiding the speed limit at night is always the sensible thing to do.

Overtaking at night should be avoided due to the lack of proper visibility. However, if it is necessary, overtake only after signaling.

Most drivers use a high beam while driving at night. The perception: a better, wider view. But the reality is far from that. High beams tend to produce glare which hampers the vision of oncoming traffic and often leads to fatal accidents for both passengers.

Windshields may appear clean during the day but reveal stains that can cause glare at night. Using a moist newspaper to clean the windscreen is recommended before driving at night. You could also use a cotton or microfiber cloth for the same purpose.

Minor safety tips like this, if employed, can be very helpful in keeping you secure and protected while driving at night. Following them isn’t the hardest thing to do. Stay safe!
