Women of Chevrolet driven to achieve

Women-DishaAt Chevrolet, the women’s council at our Gurgaon plant, Disha, is an all exclusive group established and looked after entirely by our women employees. They organize activities throughout the year relating to their empowerment, safety and other issues. With some incredible work being done and with our full support, they recently got together again and held a “Self Defense Initiative” for its members.

The one day program was very beneficial with topics such as self-protection in a moving vehicle and situational awareness being taught. Women were also given a quick class on how to apply chokes and holds and to defend against a knife or gun attack. The enthusiasm shown by the ladies was inspiring – with many keen to pass on these tips to others. Needless to say, but the initiative was a roaring success.

Chevrolet has always been proud of their women employees and seeing them take such an initiative has truly overwhelmed us. We not only encourage them, but women across the country to stand up and fight the crimes done against them. Stay safe and stay protected.

Dining options along driving routes

Dining-options-along-driving-routes-[22]The Route: Delhi. Sonipat. Panipat. Karnal. Kurukshetra. Ambala. Chandigarh. Kalka. Solan. Shoghi. Tara Devi.  Shimla.

Do remember, that after crossing Ambala the NH 1 is divided in to 2 parts. NH1 goes to Rajpura-Ludhiana and other parts, NH 22 goes to Chandigarh and Shimla.

The Grand Trunk Road, or Sher Shah Suri Marg and the now re-named National Highway No 1 is one scenic highway that’s lined with the delicious Dhabas and popular eat-outs like Nirulas, Café Coffee Day, Sagar Ratna, Subway and other fancier restaurants. The entire route is a true foodies’ delight.

Assuming you start your drive at a decent 6 or 7 a.m., you could make Murthal your breakfast halt. There is a line of Vaishnav dhabas to choose from – stop at any one for some fresh from the tandoor, stuffed aloo or paneer paranthas with white butter melting on top. Wash it down with sweet adrak chai or freshly churned lassi.

Assuming you are in no hurry to reach your destination your next halt could be at Haveli, Savoy Greens or Karna Lake in Karnal. For an off the beaten track experience, drive ahead to Ambala and look for “PURAN SINGH DA ASLI DHABHA”. The place is famous for its melt in the mouth mutton curry. The story goes that Puran Singh has never opened his Dhaba for Dinner to give other Dhaba owners a chance to earn a living. Make sure you arrive early, before the place shuts down for the day.

Once on the Chandigarh Shimla stretch, keep an eye out for Dhali which is famous for its Chicken Pickle and Gyani’s at Dharampur. Modern Dhaba is another popular choice of the frequent travellers. It’s just a little way up ahead of Gyani’s. Both places serve up some exciting dishes though Rajma Chawal is definitely the most popular choice in both places.

There’s never a boring moment on this highway with eating joints lined up on both sides of the road. Stopover at whichever place you fancy. Piping hot snacks and the cool breeze from the hills make for a heady combination.

Let your car have a safe Holi

Holi blog imageThe sheer thought of Holi fills us with joy as the splashes of gulal and the mouth-watering taste of gujias takes over. But as much as this festival of colors excites us, it leaves very little to scare us about the upkeep of our belongings. Our dear car certainly qualifies to be one of the belongings that deserve extra care during this festival, for no one wants those non-descript blotches of color on their vehicle or those stylish seats absorbing colored water from your wet clothes. We bring you some quick tips to stay safe and take care of your car while you enjoy Holi:

  • One of the easiest ways to protect your car from color is to have it wax polished before Holi.
  • While driving, protect your car seats with plastic covers or old bed sheets to ensure that they don’t get stained. You can also put water proof plastic or equivalent material on the upholstery to avoid them getting dirty.
  • You can use gloves or wrap the steering wheel with polybags to ensure the color on your hands doesn’t transfer to the steering wheel of your car.
  • Carry adequate spare clothes and towels, in case you need to change.
  • A closed garage or a separate shaded parking area is a good idea to protect unsolicited splatter on the vehicle.
  • In case you park in the open, put a good body cover over your car to protect it from color.
  • Still if the car gets splashed, don’t panic. Try washing off the stains with water and a good car shampoo. Never scuff with a dry cloth; always use a wet one.  If the stains can’t be removed, don’t rub it too harshly and look for paint detailing (rubbing and polishing). All Chevrolet Authorised Workshops are equipped to offer these services.
  • Wearing rubber slippers during Holi can be a good idea as you can wash them before you enter your vehicle.
  • Avoid taking your car out on this day, hire a cab instead.
  • Enjoy the festival of colours – Have a safe and happy Holi (Don’t drink & drive).

These are just a few tips to keep your car safe and clean during this festival of colors. Now don’t miss the opportunity to play Holi is a fun and exciting new way on Facebook with the Chevrolet Rang De app. Go ahead, try it now here. http://www.facebook.com/chevroletindia/app_355246777912833?ref=ts

Environmentally friendly cars

Environmentally-friendly-cars[19]With global warming becoming a major concern, and fossil fuel being steadily depleted, the hunt is on for sustainable fuel sources and the ideal green vehicle.

Environmentally friendly cars, also known as green vehicles are new genre of cars which have become a big trend over the past couple of years. The main attraction of these green vehicles is the fact that they have a fairly minimal impact on the environment with reduced air pollution and green house emission, thus helping people “reduce their carbon footprint”.

Green vehicles aren’t just limited to one particular type of fuel or energy source. Car companies and research organisations have been experimenting with all types of alternatives, with electric powered vehicles being one of the most popular. Besides Electric power, compressed-air, hydrogen and fuel-cell, neat ethanol, natural gas, clean diesel are also being studied and researched. Other sources of energy explored are blends of bio-diesel and ethanol fuel or gasohol.

Solar powered vehicles could well be the transportation of the future. The solar energy is trapped in solar panel placed on the top of the vehicle. Photovoltaic (PV) cells convert the Sun’s energy directly into electrical energy. So far, this type of energy has not been harnessed to its full potential and is much too dependent on the weather.

Wind-powered electric vehicles are another possibility – they primarily use wind-turbines installed at a strategic point of the vehicle, which are then converted into electric energy thus powering the vehicle.

Alternate green fuels will take time to develop, in the meanwhile conventional cars and even 2 wheelers are being made to strict quality standards that assure far more fuel efficiency than ever, especially when compared with the motoring era gone by.  In countries like India, Pakistan, Argentina, Brazil, Italy and China a sizable percentage of cars and public transport has shifted to CNG (Compressed natural Gas) engines.

At Chevrolet the alternate fuel vehicle that defines transportation of the future is the Chevrolet Volt. Imagine only hitting the gas station once a month. A fantasy? Far from it. In fact, Volt drivers who charge regularly are averaging 900 miles, or about a month between fill-ups.

With the extended range Volt, you don’t have to choose between electric or gas. You have the option of both. First is the advanced lithium–ion battery that allows you to drive gas-free for an EPA-estimated 38 miles. But Volt doesn’t stop there. There’s also an on-board gas generator that produces electricity so you can travel a total of 380 miles on a full charge and full tank of gas. Now that’s long-range savings.

One of the most awarded cars when it was launched in 2011, Volt also received a 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score for safety from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Add the 273 lb./ft. of low–end torque performance, stylish good looks, and all the high-tech amenities and you get a better understanding on how Volt is changing the way we drive.

GM India’s Talegaon Manufacturing Plant gets recognized for Energy Reduction Progress

blog-images[4]General Motors, over the years has taken big steps to reducing its carbon footprint. And these steps have also been applied to GM India’s Talegaon manufacturing plant as well. The Talegaon plant is one of 54 GM facilities worldwide which meets a voluntary energy-reduction challenge set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This has led to a 12 percent cut in its energy intensity in less than two years; meeting the EPA’s ENERGY STAR® Challenge for Industry Award.

So what exactly is ENERGY STAR? It was introduced by EPA (U.S Environmental Protection Agency) in 1992 as a voluntary partnership to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the efficient use of energy. ENERGY STAR’s label is now found on over 60 products as well as new homes and commercial and industrial buildings that meet strict energy-efficiency specifications set by the EPA.

To meet the ENERGY STAR Challenge for Industry Award isn’t an easy task and GM has been working hard to cover the requirements. The facilities are needed to reduce their energy intensity by 10 percent within a five years period. This stipulation led to the Talegaon manufacturing plant releasing 4,419 tons less of CO2 into the atmosphere.

GM’s Vice President of Sustainability and Global Regulatory Affairs, Mr. Mike Robinson said, “Our employees are committed to helping increase our global operations’ energy efficiency.” He went on to state, “They remain at the core of our progress… The total amount of energy savings across all GM manufacturing plants is $90 million and most of the plants are located in the U.S. and Asian countries.”

Mr. Lowell Paddock, President & Managing Director, General Motors India explained saying “To achieve the Challenge for Industry Award, our  manufacturing plant used various innovative energy-saving strategies like adoption of  energy efficient designs &  technologies, optimization of  process parameters, usage of  reliable process controls and lighting systems among other energy saving methods to reduce energy consumption. Through a diligent environmental process, we have instilled a sense of responsibility to the environment that goes beyond our location in India.”  Going by what Mr. Paddock had to say, GM India’s Talegaon plant aims to further reduce its emissions by implementing heating and cooling guidelines, efficient operation of heating equipment and reducing or shutting down energy use during the period the plant is not in production mode.

GM has already received an ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year award the previous year for its energy management.  From 2005-10, it managed to reduce energy use in all its global facilities by 28 percent and has since set a new itself a new goal to reduce 20 per cent energy intensity globally by 2020. Not surprisingly, General Motors India received the third prize for Energy Conservation at the National Energy Conservation Awards 2010. In 2011, GM India’s Talegaon manufacturing plant got two more awards in State Level competition for Excellence in Energy Conservation and Management in the Automobile Manufacturing Sector.
