GM Expands Landfill-Free Efforts in Asia

General Motors around the globe is always looking for ways and means to reduce its carbon footprint and give back to the environment more than it takes. Going by these high standards, the Landfill-free initiative helps recycle, reuse or convert daily waste to energy.

With the two new proving grounds in Thailand and Cheong-na, the overall total for GM plants that are landfill-free in Asia has risen to 33 and 106 worldwide. And our two manufacturing plants in India are also part of this group.

Our plant in Talegaon, recently swapped wood pallets for reusable, recycled-content plastic containers that weigh and cost less. The facility reduced wood pallet waste by a significant amount last year, and now has GM’s North American operations looking into the use of these plastic containers in their operations. The Talegaon plant was able to reduce 10 tons of litter in one year alone with it waste-reduction practices like wastewater treatment, painting or grinding, and locally sourcing and sanitizing gloves for reuse.

Speaking about this, Mr. John Bradburn, GM Manager of Waste-reduction Efforts said, “Wood pallets oftentimes aren’t built to be reused after one overseas shipment. Our most common recycling method is to grind them for mulch, and our South Africa plant is even taking them apart to make furniture. But our teams in Asia employed a more sustainable solution. By using plastic, they cut weight by more than half and we can continue using them after the initial load.”

Mr. Tim Lee, GM Vice President, Global Manufacturing and President of International Operations said, “Regardless of where our teams are building cars for our customers around the world, we all share a commitment to the environment. We work with all of our plants to ensure they have a roadmap to get to landfill-free, which is important considering our commitment of 125 landfill-free facilities by 2020.”

On 19 July, 2013, the CSR HQ team visited NGO ‘Goonj’ and contributed clothes, books, stationery, toys, school bags, woolens and blankets. The contributions also included relief materials for victims affected by the floods and landslides in Uttarakhand.

The contributions at ‘Goonj’ goes beyond the realm of charity and plays a crucial role in the community development process as every contribution is turned into a dignified giving.

Chevrolet Mileage Rally – Hyderabad Enjoys

Chevrolet Mileage RallyThe Chevrolet Mileage Rally, organized by Chevrolet on 14th July, 2013, was a roaring success. The enthusiasm shown by our customers was simply spectacular and created a buzz that kept the level of enjoyment high through the night.

There were 37 cars consisting of Spark, Beat Petrol and Beat Diesel that participated in the rally. The drive from the BPCL Petrol Station, Punjagutta to the BPCL Petrol Station at Keesara was a short and pleasant 50 kms. Participants were particularly impressed with the mileage given by each car with winner in Beat Diesel category clocking an incredible mileage of 38.90 kmpl.

The winners in each category of Spark, Beat Petrol and Beat Diesel in the rally were given handsome cash reward of Rs. 10,000 each while the runners up received Rs. 8,000 each besides trophies and certificates as well. The other participants were also given recognition for making the event a success with goodies sponsored by Gandour Chocolates, Cavin Milkshake and Cookie Man.

After the rally, nearly 250 customers and their families graced the evening function at Alankrita Resort, Shameerpet. With magic acts, tattoo artists, face painting and other games, everyone present was more than thrilled to be part of the celebrations.

Chevrolet and their dealers – Orange and KUN poured their heart not only into making this event come alive, but ensured its success as well. The 80 referrals received shows what can be achieved through hard work. Chevrolet is proud of this effort and is grateful to have such dealerships. Chevrolet’s Bowtie Celebrates 100th Anniversary

Chevrolet Bowtie LogoChevrolet’s legendary and iconic bowtie celebrated its 100th anniversary this year.

In 1913, Chevrolet co-founder William Durant introduced the signature Chevy bowtie on the 1914 Chevrolet H-2 Royal Mail and the H-4 Baby Grand, centered at the front of both models. But one question has bugged fans around the world since then – “What on earth is the inspiration behind the logo?

While the bowtie has been present for 100 years, the details surrounding its origin are still uncertain. Stories range from Durant being inspired by the wallpaper design in a Parisian hotel to a newspaper advertisement he saw while vacationing in Hot Springs, Va.  However, Durant’s widow and daughter have offered alternative explanations.

According to Margery Durant, in her 1929 book “My Father”, Durant sometimes drew nameplate designs on pieces of paper at the dinner table. “I think it was between the soup and the fried chicken one night that he sketched out the design that is used on the Chevrolet car to this day,” she wrote.

But in a 1968 interview, Durant’s widow, Catherine, said the bowtie design originated from a Hot Springs vacation in 1912. While reading a newspaper in their hotel room, Durant spotted a design and exclaimed, “I think this would be a very good emblem for the Chevrolet.” Unfortunately, Mrs. Durant never clarified what the motif was or how it was used.

That little information inspired Ken Kaufmann, historian and editor of The Chevrolet Review, to search out its validity. In a Nov. 12, 1911 edition of The Constitution newspaper, published in Atlanta, an advertisement appeared from by the Southern Compressed Coal Company for “Coalettes,” a refined fuel product for fires. The Coalettes logo, as published in the ad, had a slanted bowtie form, very similar to the shape that would soon become the Chevrolet icon.

Did Durant and his wife see the same ad – or one similar – the following year a few states to the north? The date of the paper Kaufmann found was just nine days after the incorporation of the Chevrolet Motor Co. The first use of the bowtie by Chevrolet appeared in the Oct. 2, 1913 edition of The Washington Post with the words “Look for this nameplate” above the symbol.

Whatever you choose to believe is your decision.

Nonetheless, we can tell you proudly today that sixty million Chevrolets are on the roads worldwide today and the bowtie has adorned 215 million Chevrolets over the last century. A Chevrolet car, crossover or truck is sold every 6.39 seconds in one of 140 countries, and the brand set a sales record of 2.5 million in the first six months of the year. The bowtie’s centennial is marked by new entries, such as the Cruze Clean Turbo Diesel compact sedan in the U.S. and the Trax small SUV in 40 international markets.

At Aryaman Chevrolet, around 100 cars were satisfactorily delivered to their enthusiastic owners. Not only that, Chevy awarded special gifts to customers and congratulated the dealership and the sales team for their monumental effort. The celebrations didn’t stop here. After delivering brand new vehicles to customers, they, along with their families, enjoyed refreshments and the ladies got special Chevrolet mehendis tattooed too!

He also addressed the sales team and customers reasserting the Chevrolet promise and guaranteeing a pleasant experience at all times. But with 200 deliveries in a single day, Triumph Chevrolet in Jaipur takes the cake for its unbelievable effort and commitment to the brand. It takes a very dedicated team of employees to carry something out so grand and we, at Chevrolet, are extremely proud of the work being done by them.

How to burn rubber and not your pockets

milageYour car burned a rather big hole in your bank account when you decided to buy it. And now you have another headache – mileage issues. It’s probably got you wishing cars were never invented. But you needn’t worry about it that much. There’s no need to resort to cycling to work, which isn’t a bad idea actually. Here are some tips and suggestion to improve your vehicles mileage.

  • Keep your tyre pressure at optimal level. It makes a huge difference to your car’s fuel efficiency. Tyres low on pressure cause friction between the rubber and the road and results in higher fuel consumption. You don’t want something so basic to cause you so much trouble!
  • Be smooth with the controls. Caress them and treat the accelerator and brake pedals like you’re giving them a massage.
  • Useless acceleration and sudden braking can cause harm to your vehicle’s fuel efficiency. Not that fun anymore is it!
  • Your car drinks more fuel in a lower gear when you accelerate. So, if the engine’s not pulling, shift down a gear rather than punching down on the throttle.
  • Idling – The act of burning fuel without really going anywhere. Turn your engine off if you’re stationary!
  • Lose weight! No, you don’t need to diet for this tip to work. Throw out any unnecessary junk lying around in your car.
  • And if none of these work – Walk!These are just some useful tips that can help you improve the mileage of your car. Whether you use them is up to you. General Motors goes green for a week

ENERGY[2]We, at General Motors India, are whole-heartedly committed to ensuring that the society and environment we live in is as safe and healthy as any other. And, over the years, we’ve tried to make a difference by conducting various activities related to this cause.

General Motors’ Talegaon plant recently concluded its first Energy Conservation Week. Held from June 17th – 22nd 2013, the idea behind this was to raise awareness amongst all about the importance of natural resource management and conservation. The program started-off with a note from the Plant Head, Mr. Rakesh Sabbarwal, where he spoke about the importance of energy conservation and laid the agenda for the week.

After the traditional diya lighting by the senior leadership and an “Energy Pledge” taken by all across different shops, it was time for the Energy Conservation Week to begin. There were a host of activities for all to indulge in which included sessions on ENCON ideas and seminars on ‘The most dreadful power pollutants in the industry’. There was even a special talk on ‘Energy Saving Tips for Home’ organized for Urja ladies. A series of e-mails were sent out every day, focusing on the importance of energy conservation as well.

Apart from this, there was a quiz organized for shop floor employees, a tree plantation drive hosted for the senior leadership and a stall set up in the cafeteria displaying energy saving products.

With the program receiving such a warm and enthusiastic response from everyone, the first Energy Conservation week was a big success. And we’re proud of it! We will surely be conducting more such programs in the future, because we, at Chevrolet, care!

1[4]Sitting on your front porch, gawking at the cloudy blue sky and wondering what to do? Maybe you could take some inspiration from Dhawal Mhatre! Dhawal decided to drive down from Vasai to Lonavla one Saturday night. And here’s his experience:

“Saturday night, my bags were packed and I was ready for a road trip with my friends and my Chevrolet Captiva.

We left from Vasai and started our little journey with a full tank and a car filled to capacity with my friends. With the weather not in our favor and traffic being a headache, things didn’t start off too brightly. But this didn’t shatter our enthusiasm. To get out of this rut, we decided to take a U-turn and found another way through JVLR (Jogeshwari-Vikroli link road). Even though the road on this lesser used track was filled with potholes, we hardly felt them in the Captiva.

Eventually, we hit the Mumbai-Pune expressway and with some good music playing, it was smooth sailing thereafter till Lonavla thanks to the spaciousness and comfort of the car. We stopped by a local dhaba and filled ourselves on some scrumptious food and enjoyed the night that lay before us.

No sooner had we reached, it was time to head back. Heavy showers meant the road ahead wasn’t too visible for most our, but the powerful headlamps of the car made this a lot easier and safer for us.

In the end, everyone was happy with this little trip and enjoyed the drive. I am looking forward to more such road trips especially with my Captiva.”

Let’s face it. None of us actually have the time to wash our cars ourselves. This is a job that we’ve conveniently delegate to lesser mortals. And what do they do? Take the shortcut. Sprinkle it with a little water, wipe the smudges and voila! Look your car’s spic and span. But is that good enough? More importantly, is it good enough for your car? How about a few smart tips that will keep your car sparkling clean and presentable for longer!

  • Let’s get the obvious one out of the way first. Your grandma’s remedies won’t work here!
  • Remember, household cleaners are meant for the house. Not cars. So if you’re using those to clean your car, stop! Use automotive cleaning products only.
  • Cars don’t have sunscreens. So, don’t wash your vehicle under the hot sun. The cleaning product will dry up quickly becoming harder to remove and could leave your car looking like it was scratched in a brawl.
  • Give your car some love and some warmth. Rinse it in warm water before applying anything. That makes it a whole lot easier to remove mud, dirt, smudges and dust.
  • Start at the grassroots. Always wash from bottom to top, and then back down again. Why? Because if you work from top to bottom, the dirty water will drain down the panels and make it harder to see where you have cleaned.
  • Don’t let your dirty linen get your car soiled. Clean your wash cloth regularly with detergent to remove any dirt that might be left on it. Using a dirty cloth is basically putting dirt back on your car.
  • Polished appearances make great impressions. A good waxing goes a long way in protecting your vehicle from dirt. So, get your car polished every 4 – 6 months. That should be enough. Your car will be much easier to clean.There you go! Some really easy, yet effective and clever tips to keep your car looking sparking new. Because that’s the way it should be!
