Chevrolet India & OWF celebrate Children’s Day in style!

Chevrolet & OWF celebrate Children’s Day

Initiative kicks off with donation of 91 One World Futbols at Gurgaon-based Sankalp NGO

14 November, Gurgaon – Chevrolet India today announced the kick-off of the donation and delivery of 20,000 nearly indestructible One World Futbols to marginalized and underprivileged children in India on the special occasion of Children’s Day, November 14. The unique initiative is aimed at reaching out to the less fortunate children in India, especially those who cannot afford and maintain a football.

“Many of these children are growing up in less privileged circumstances where sometimes a game of football could lighten up their lives by teaching them the true meaning of team spirit and fair play,” said Lowell Paddock, President and Managing Director, GM India.

“The joy that comes from playing football can help lift their spirits and replace despair with hope. Chevrolet’s founding sponsorship of One World Futbol Project is intended to spark a worldwide movement to give children a pathway out of poverty and despair with the benefits that fitness, sport and teamwork can bring – something we call the ‘Power of Play’,” added Paddock.

The unique initiative today kicked off with donation of 91 footballs to Sankalp School in Gurgaon—a school for disadvantaged children run by Gurgaon-based NGO Sankalp Welfare Society. The Chevrolet-branded One World Futbols, delivered to the school in a Chevrolet Enjoy Multi-Purpose Vehicle, brought countless smiles to over 900 children who can now enjoy the game of football as much as they want.

With the corporate social responsibility mission of “Driving a Better Tomorrow,” Chevrolet India is working with One World Futbol Project to donate a total of at least 20,000 One World Futbols to disadvantaged children across the country.  During the next few weeks, Chevrolet India plans to donate additional footballs in the communities where it is located, including Talegaon, Bangalore and Halol. The remaining Chevrolet-sponsored One World Futbols will be delivered through One World Futbol Project’s partner, Slum Soccer, to a number of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working with underprivileged youth in India. Slum Soccer is an India-based NGO focused on reaching out to the Indian homeless using football as a tool for social improvement and empowerment.

“It’s our pleasure to work with Chevrolet India to support the donation and delivery of One World Futbols — first to Sankalp School and then throughout the rest of India with Slum Soccer,” said Arnold Ambiel, Chief Operating Officer of One World Futbol Project. “The spirit of this joint collaboration will allow us to bring the power of play to more children throughout India than any of us could have done alone. And seeing the joy on the children’s faces on Children’s Day makes all these efforts worthwhile.”

This initiative is part of Chevrolet’s three-year founding sponsorship of One World Futbol Project that pledges to place 1.5 million One World Futbols with youth living in war-stricken zones, refugee camps, disaster areas, and other underprivileged communities around the world. One World Futbol Project makes, sells and distributes the One World Futbol, a nearly indestructible ball that never needs a pump and never goes flat—even when punctured multiple times. The company’s mission is to make a meaningful impact by bringing the joy of soccer and play to youth around the world through the One World Futbol.

One World Futbol inventor—Tim Jahnigen—was inspired to create the One World Futbol after watching news footage of kids in Darfur playing a football game using a ball of trash tied up with twine. One World Futbols are designed to outlast and outplay hundreds of regular footballs, sustaining play in any environment or harsh landscape. One World Futbol Project distributes One World Futbols to organizations working with youth in disadvantaged communities, where play can be used to teach life skills and foster social change.

To date, more than 500,000 Chevrolet-sponsored One World Futbols have been distributed across five continents, bringing the power of play to over 15 million children.

One World Futbol Project Changes the Lives of Youth Across the World

ChevyOneWorldFutbol016

Who could have ever imagined that a bunch of kids playing with a ball of trash tied up with strings in Darfur and Tim Jahnigen watching news footage of the game would spark the brilliant idea of the One World Futbol? But it did. Inspired by the children’s indestructible spirit, Tim resolved to create a ball that could withstand the harsh conditions faced by youth living in refugee camps, disaster areas and other disadvantaged communities.

Tim set out to design a ball that played like a soccer ball, but would never need a pump and never go flat – even when punctured multiple times. His idea remained in the concept stage until his friend, the world‐renowned entertainer Sting heard Tim’s vision for the ball, and provided the initial funding to do develop a prototype.

In recognition of Sting’s crucial, early support, the name of the ball and the company are based on the song “One World,” written by Sting.

Hear the story of the One World Futbol from Sting and Tim.

It all started in Rwanda in 2009, when 100 of the first prototype One World Futbols were delivered to an organization called Espérance, which works to help bridge gaps in the community through education and social programs focused around football. The durability of the 100 balls given back in 2009 helped the organization save valuable resources as they no longer had to purchase 1,000 regular footballs for their efforts.

Girls.in.Kenya.with.OneWorldFutbol

Since that early delivery, One World Futbol Project has shipped nearly 600,000 One World Futbols across Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas, with a mission to bring the healing power of play to youth living in disadvantaged communities worldwide. The company has helped change entire nations like Liberia, bringing play, recess and athletic programs back to schools after a 20-year absence. It has brought the power of play to orphanages and schools in the most rural and poorest regions of Thailand. And, the One World Futbol has helped girls find their voices in places like Kenya, where women have very few rights.

From that initial moment of inspiration through today, the nearly indestructible One World Futbol has reached more than 160 countries and impacted nearly 18 million youth in just three years.

In May 2012, Chevrolet announced a three-year partnership with One World Futbol Project that pledges to place 1.5 million One World Futbols with youth in war-stricken zones, refugee camps, disaster areas, and other underprivileged communities around the world.  To date, Chevrolet-branded One World Futbols have been distributed across five continents impacting millions of children.
